Dryer Vent Pumpkins

My first project came from Pinterest.

If you are not on Pinterest yet, I highly recommend it. It is an excellent place for ideas and to get those creative juices flowing. It is also very addictive.

On to the project.

You will need:

  • Glue gun and glue
  • Felt Squares
  • Xacto knife or scissors
  • Spray paint
  • Dryer Vent (available at hardware type stores)
  • Rafia Ribbon
  • Wire cutters (not pictured)

The first thing that I did was cut the dryer vent to the appropriate length. The Xacto knife cut easily through the thin aluminum. However, I needed wire cutters to cut through the wire.
I tested the length by circling the vent on to itself. The vent I used was about 4.5" in diameter. I found that a length between 26.5"-27" worked well.
Next, I spray painted the dryer vent, being careful to cover it completely. I chose to use traditional orange, but you could use any range of colors. Make it your own.
While the spray paint was drying, I began working on the stem. I decided to use felt, but there are several other things that you could use. One that I thought was clever was to use a bundle of cinnamon sticks.

I took a felt square and folded it hamburger style, then cut it in half.
Next, I rolled the felt up. The end product should be the length of the short side of the rectangle.

When finished rolling, I used the hot glue gun to secure my rolls shape.
Here's what the finished product should look like. Please excuse the orange spray paint on my fingers.

After checking that the spray paint was dry, I put my stem in the center of the circled dryer vent.

I used the glue gun to secure the ends of the dryer vent together.
Now, it looks like this.
The final step is to tie the rafia ribbon around the stem. I choose ribbon with a greenish tint, but there are lots of good choices.

Here is what the end product looks like.
I made three pumpkins. Now my dining room table is dressed for fall.

In the begining...

Hi,

In the past two years, I have gotten married, started and finished grad school, and begun a new career. Life has been a whirlwind full of creative opportunities. Until about a month ago.

Life is still full of wonderful family and friends ,jobs, dogs, and much more. However, I have found myself missing the joy of creating something. So, I started a blog.

This goal of this blog is to encourage me to do at least one creative thing a week. Sometimes it will be an art activity, sometimes it will be creating something new in the kitchen, other times it will be a project around the house. I will also use the book, How to be an Explorer of the World: Portable Life Museum by Keri Smith (available on Amazon.com) as a source of inspiration.

I look forward to the places that this project will take me. I hope that you enjoy it and find yourself inspired.
